ROCK RAPIDS, IA - Fans at Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa are in for a very special treat as part of Friday's 2010 season opener.
For just the second time in track history, and first in 17 years, the 410 Outlaw Sprints will battle it out on "Rocky's" 3/8-mile oval. Heartland Racing Association vice president, Jeff Davis says it's a race you won't want to miss.
"We've raised some of the greatest sprint car drivers of all time right out of Sioux Falls from the 410 ranks, that's what the fans come to see. And that's what we're going to show them," Davis said.
"All the good local guys are going to be here. There's a bunch of them coming up from Knoxville: Lynton Jeffrey, Austin McCarl, Brian Brown will be here. It's going to be a first class 410 show. This no second rate race. This is going to be the one."
Davis says the track's 80-foot wide surface will provide maximum raceability. But that's only part of the reason his group decided to bring the Outlaws back.
The 410s have been a little bit supressed around here. We want to give them another place to race," Davis said. "We've got a five race series in conjunction with I-90 Speedway, so we're going to have five 410 races this year with a mutual point fund. We feel like the fans, they pack the stands for 410s, that must be what they want to see, and that's what we want to show them. It's a bump that the 410 guys need too. They need to be able to race more than one night a week."
The Heartland Racing Association is certainly putting it's money where it's mouth is. Friday's 410 feature pays $2500 to win and $400 to start.
